Cockatoo Island is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed sanctuary in the heart of Sydney Harbour.
In the Dharug language, it is known as Wareamah, meaning ‘women’s land’ and the historic island has emerged as an iconic contemporary arts venue. It was once a convict penal establishment, reformatory school and naval ship dockyard.
Cockatoo Island has heritage accommodation, a waterfront campground, a program of tours, family-friendly cafés and tranquil picnic spots with panoramic harbour views.

GETTING THERE

The easiest way to get to Cockatoo Island is by Public ferry. The F3 and F8 ferry services operate to Cockatoo Island daily from Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and Barangaroo as well as from wharves along the Parramatta River. AMENITIES ON THE ISLAND

Cockatoo Island has wheelchair access, toilet facilities (including accessible toilets), vending machines, barbeques, showers, an Opal card top-up machine, a kitchen (for exclusive use by campers), free Wi-Fi (enquire at the Visitor Centre) and gold coin-operated lockers.

GETTING AROUND

Most areas of the island are wheelchair accessible; however, there is a steep incline from the lower island to the upper plateau, and – owing to the island’s industrial heritage – there are uneven surfaces as well as some buildings not accessible by wheelchair. Just check at the Visitor Centre near the ferry wharf and they will help to enjoy your visit to the island. Open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday.

SYDNEY HARBOUR TRUST

In September 1998, the Commonwealth Government announced the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (Harbour Trust) – a statutory agency tasked with rehabilitating former Defence and other Commonwealth lands around Sydney Harbour, conserving their natural and built heritage, and returning them to the people of Australia. These lands had been hidden away from public view for many years, left derelict, run-down and in some cases contaminated.
